Over the past two weeks, I’ve seen some of the most phenomenal sunsets, eaten some incredible food, and went to some beautiful beaches.
Athens
We spent two days in Athens and I would probably never go back, if you’ve never been you have to go to see the Parthenon and the Acropolis it’s incredible how long those ruins have been there. We, unfortunately, were there over the weekend which is when all the cruise ships come and there are so many people (so that was a real bummer) but I’m sure there’s always a ton of people there since its such a tourist attraction. Other than that it’s just like an average city, there’s a ton of people, its a tourist-based city so there are lots of shops catered to tourism, there is graffiti everywhere, stray cats and dogs (but they are all over the islands as well). If you are planning a trip to Athens I recommend only staying for a few days there really isn’t that much to see.
Crete
Crete is about the size of the big island in Hawaii, if you are staying in Crete you need to rent a car if you want to see any of the sights such as Elafonissi and Balos Beach. We stayed in the town of Rethymno and nearly every night we went into the town they have all these alleys with shopping and restaurants, it’s so fun and lively. From the town of Rethymno, Elafonissi was about a 2-hour drive but it was totally worth it because the beach is breathtaking the water is crystal clear and sand is pink I honestly could have stayed there forever. We also went to Balos Beach which was pretty difficult to get to but again totally worth its a 10km drive up a steep dirt road and then a 2km hike to the beach but it’s stunning there are 2 different water sources and a strip of sand that connect them. If you are planning a trip to Crete go to those two beaches, the town of Rethymno, and Bali (a town) and Karavosti beach.
Santorini
We took a boat from Crete to Santorini and the port is an absolute disaster, my number one tip if you’re taking a boat in is to make sure you hired a car service; because there are only 30 taxis on the whole island so don’t count on one. We stayed an Oia and went into the town of Thira and personally preferred Oia it’s just a little nicer and that’s where you can see all the sunsets from. One day we went down to Amoudi Bay (which is in Oia) and followed the trail down to the swimming hole. There are really no sand beaches in Santorini and the only way to go to one is to take a boat tour which we didn’t do but it is an option if you want to see some of the beaches. Another word of advice is the Santorini airport is fairly small and unorganized, I don’t recommend flying out on weekend are flight was delayed about 4 hours but we met some people that their flights were delayed 18 hours. Other than the port and airport Santorini was beautiful!
